Pence Animal Sculptures is a family business including sisters (Darlene, Shirley) and their niece Sherri. We have been in business for over 50 years making and designing our own pieces. We never use molds, every piece is an original. Talent, creativity and the love of animals goes into each and every one of our designs.
The basic materials used are clay in moist form and tools for carving and texture. We start with a lump of clay and mold it into a animal with our hands. A potters wheel is used for some parts of the designs. Once the sculpture is molded, we dry it in the sun for several days. The next step is to fire it to stoneware in an electric kiln. This process insures quality and lasting durability. Once fired we use various glazes to enhance color. At this point our sculpture is complete.
